Hope just keeps getting brighter! CapitaLand’s philanthropic arm, the CapitaLand Hope Foundation (CHF) celebrated its 5th anniversary last month by donating S$500,000 to the President’s Challenge 2010.

Out of the S$500,000, S$400,000 was raised by 20 organisations that donated S$20,000 each through CHF. These 20 organisations are namely, Allen & Gledhill, Credit Suisse (Singapore) Limited, Davis Langdon & Seah Singapore Pte Ltd, DBS Bank, DCA Architects Pte Ltd, DP Architects Pte Ltd, Drew & Napier LLC, J.P. Morgan (S.E.A.) Limited, KPMG LLP, Lee & Lee, Lum Chang Holdings Ltd, Obayashi Corporation, Rajah & Tann LLP, RSP Architects Planners & Engineers (Pte) Ltd, Shimizu Corporation, Standard Chartered Bank, UBS AG, United Overseas Bank Group, Woh Hup (Pte) Ltd and WongPartnership LLP.

These organizations were presented with specially autographed editions of “Building People: Sunday Emails from a CEO Volume 2” by His Excellency S R Nathan, President of the Republic of Singapore, for their donation. President Nathan also officiated the launch of the book.

Building People: Sunday Emails from a CEO Volume 2” is the second volume of a compilation of “hobby emails” written by Mr Liew Mun Leong, President & CEO of CapitaLand Group.

“Like the first volume, this second volume ensures that we leave behind for posterity the core values, morals, ethics, ethos and corporate culture of an ever-expanding CapitaLand Group through “story-telling” of real-life events. This hobby of writing anecdotal emails has been an essential means for me to communicate directly with all my colleagues in the company, whether they are in Singapore, China, Vietnam, Australia, Europe, Malaysia, Japan or elsewhere. With CapitaLand celebrating its 10th anniversary this November, it is also an appropriate time to publish this second volume as a means to capture my thoughts,” said Mr Liew.

Besides the S$400,000 raised, CHF has also contributed S$100,000 to the President’s Challenge. This is in support of “The New Paper Be Yourself Day”, now in its ninth year.

“Since 2005, CapitaLand Hope Foundation has donated about S$10 million to aid underprivileged children, a commendable effort for a young foundation like us. We will continue to support programmes that meet the shelter, education and healthcare needs of underprivileged children in Singapore and overseas,” said Mr Lim Chin Beng, Chairman of CapitaLand Hope Foundation.

Some of the beneficiaries that CHF has supported include Food From The Heart, Jamiyah Children’s Home and Straits Times Pocket Money Fund in Singapore; UNICEF China and China Children and Teenagers’ Fund in China; and Gentle Fund Organization in Vietnam.

In 2010, CHF made a landmark initiative by giving S$525,000 to CapitaLand’s Kids’ Food Fund programme. This provided nutritious food for over 11,000 underprivileged children in Singapore, China, Philippines and Thailand.

This year, CapitaLand also built its first CapitaLand Hope School in Vietnam – the CapitaLand Nang Yen Primary Hope School in Hanoi. In China, there are already a total of 15 CapitaLand Hope Schools in operation or under development in Guangdong, Inner Mongolia, Sichuan, Yunnan and Zhejiang, built through CapitaLand’s collaboration with local authorities and charities.

In just five short years, CapitaLand Hope Foundation has indeed achieved much in giving back to the communities the company operates in by building a better future for underprivileged children. It has always focused on supporting programmes for the shelter, education and healthcare needs of underprivileged children in Singapore and overseas. Every year, CapitaLand allocates up to 0.5% of its net profit to the Foundation. Indeed, hope for the underprivileged just keeps getting brighter with socially responsible corporate citizens like CapitaLand!
