Thailand prides itself on being a music destination. Eastern and western artistes performing rock, pop or jazz, DJs with wicked mixes of electro, techno and a never-ending list of new introductions: The best have been to Thailand and Thailand has some of the best. The trick is knowing when to visit for a musical escape.

Pattaya has both the qualities of a sophisticated destination and a laid back island. It has everything: big shopping malls, world-renowned golf courses, beautiful beaches and nature parks.

Also known for its exciting nightlife, Pattaya is at its most entertaining during the annual Pattaya Music Festival, which takes place in March.

The international festival recognised Asia-wide, and maybe even worldwide, sees a crowd of more than 600,000.

Part of the Thailand’s Amazing Thailand, Amazing Value tourism campaign, it is a totally free event despite the extensive line-up of musicians and artistes.

The international line-up includes Rynn Lim from Malaysia, Minh Thu from Vietnam, Cirque de Freak from Australia, Kym Jin Sha from China, and Shinee and Girls Generation from Korea.

The event held over three days features pop, rock, R & B, jazz, hip hop and country and western on three different stages.

Although Thailand is home to many foreign DJs, the local Thai DJs are whom you should keep your ears open for while in Thailand. They are making a name for themselves.

DJ Nakadia, Thailand's most popular female DJ

DJ Nakadia, one of Thailand’s most famous DJs, has trotted around the globe with her exquisite charm, inspiring international crowds to dance their hearts out to her mixes.

She feels that Thailand’s talents are not appreciated enough as jobs are given to foreign DJs or musicians instead.

“I hope I can do something to make a change in the future.”

As she spoke of her achievements, she exuded quiet pride, “I will have the biggest gig of my life in Johannesburg, South Africa. I will play in front of 100,000 people in the stadium and my set will be live on all MTV channels around the world. I will present my first album at that event (Loveparade 2009). I think that will be a big step for me and for other Thai DJs.

Famous Techno DJ/ producer/ musician: Montonn Jira

Renowned DJ Montonn Jira is known for his eclectic, unique sound which though esoteric is well worth delving into for its richness. He has his own label, Samutprakarn Sound, which probably is the only label in the country that releases music on iTunes.

“I'm working as the musical director for Heineken's "Music Beyond Borders" campaign which brings in international bands to perform at their festivals throughout the year,” said the artiste who wants to help mould the music scene in Thailand.

“My goal is to bring in fresh new artists that are shaping and influencing the scene of today.”

Thai DJs can be found at some big clubs and more so at smaller clubs in Bangkok. They keep up to date with new sounds and organise mind-blowing parties. Party scenes that are a must-visit in Bangkok are in the streets of Khao San, Silom, Sukhumvit and RCA Bangkok.
