CapitaLand’s efforts in protecting the environment, in particular in water conservation, have won top honours from Singapore’s national water agency, the PUB. President and CEO of CapitaLand Group, Mr Liew Mun Leong, received the Watermark Award from Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, at the awards ceremony held at Marina Barrage, on 29 September 2009. CapitaLand won for its strong management commitment to the water cause; active water management and conservation efforts at its properties; and its community outreach programmes.

NEWater (reclaimed water) is used at many CapitaLand properties, including Capital Tower’s water feature and fire fighting system.
Active Management - Green buildings
CapitaLand established a Green Committee in 2006 to ensure that green initiatives, including water management and conservation measures, are implemented in the Group’s properties in Singapore and overseas. A set of Green Buildings Guidelines advocate green best practices in the entire lifecycle of a building: from feasibility, design, procurement, construction to operation. There is also an online Environmental Tracking System (ETS) to monitor and improve the water consumption of its properties worldwide. In 2008, the Group reduced water consumption in Singapore by 6.6%, enough water to fill over 41 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Another water conservation initiative is the use of rainwater for landscape irrigation at Sembawang Shopping Centre
A 4,000 sq ft water feature at Clarke Quay’s Central Square uses chilled recycled water to keep temperatures down while trees planted all around the area provide shade and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
One George Street is one of the 17 CapitaLand commercial buildings and retail malls in Singapore that have won PUB’s Water Efficient Building Award for meeting its water conservation criteria

In September 2009, CapitaLand brought the water message to school children through its regular PEEK (Providing Educational Exposure for Kids) programme at Clarke Quay
The school children found out how Clarke Quay’s unique canopy and ventilation system, as well as the central water feature, cools the surrounding temperature making it comfortable for patrons
