New Unique Works on Paper

Stephen Pimbley, premier British architect and co-founder of architectural firm SPARCH, and Lim Wenhui, associate architect at SPARCH began making prints two years ago. They consider printmaking to be an important aspect of their work, complementing their architectural projects. It provides them as architects the opportunity to make work with no fixed agenda a process of exploration and fun outside the often constrained environment of the architect. The work also demonstrates the close links between printmaking and architecture, where ideas first explored as prints, may subsequently be developed as an expression of composition of space, texture and colour in architecture.

Spurred by an educational and humanitarian initiative of the CapitaLand Hope Schools, Pimbley and Lim decided to bring some 125 of their private print works out to the public for the first time for sale to raise funds for the children of the schools. In 2008, they travelled to Sichuan province upon invitation by CapitaLand to be a judge for the first CapitaLand Green Hope School design competition. Then, they spent an unforgettable day with the children of this new school that CapitaLand was going to built.

“It was a day that would stay with us forever. It was shocking, moving, humbling, cold, damp and a lot of fun. Days like that in one’s life are seldom. We would thus like to give something back and reciprocate the warmth and kindness shown by the staff, children and officials of Leshan and Muchuan,” said Pimbley.

Touched by the children, all proceeds from the sale of these prints by Pimbley and Lim will be donated to CapitaLand Hope Foundation in aid of the children of the CapitaLand Hope Schools in China. “ I hope people will react to it in good spirit as the underlying objective is a cause that’s important to support,” added Pimbley.
