The bakery, whose lone outlet in Singapore is located at ION Orchard that is linked to Orchard MRT, offers over 50 varieties of European-styled bread and baked goods made with a touch of Japanese. Its traditional loaves are freshly baked on site using classic baking techniques and quality, nutritious ingredients like dark rye, wholemeal flour and wheatgrass. For a sweet wake-up call, try the Chocolate Melon Brioche. The rich, dark bun provides a chocolate flavour that satisfies without overpowering the perfume of the melon while dusting of sugar on top gives the crust extra crunch. For extreme indulgence, we suggest the Chestnut Danish, a tart crowned with a mountain of velvety chestnut puree, chopped pistachio and capped with half a chestnut. The pistachio offers a fragrant burst of flavour that complements the rich, smooth chestnut cream in both taste and texture. The Multigrain Bacon Cheese is a savoury alternative that lets you have your pleasure with less guilt. ![]() Blending East and West is this Five Spices Foie Gras from Chef Daniel's Kitchen Photo credit: www.huiyuan89.wordpress.com Lunch at the Top After your morning tasks, hop onto the MRT and head to Iluma for lunch, right across from Bugis MRT station. Visit Chef Daniel's Kitchen, its only Singapore outlet sits on the rooftop of Illuma, providing a gorgeous city view. The restaurant features a blend of Eastern and Western cuisine. For starters, have the Five Spices Foie Gras. The Chinese spice typically used to make ngoh hiang (minced meat rolls encased in fried beancurd skin) enhances the mild, creamy taste of the goose liver. Served with a side of melon balls on a bed of black and white glutinous rice, the Asian treatment of this French delicacy is imaginative. As a main course, we recommend the Char Siew (sweet, red sauce) Lamb Loin. Seasoned with sauce and slow roasted before being flambéed with rose wine, the use of Asian sauce for lamb that is traditionally stewed in Western cuisine is quite ingenious. End the meal with Baked Alaska, a coconut ice cream dessert served with slices of sponge cake and topped with meringue. ![]() This giant thick toast the size of half a loaf of bread is proof that size matters at Wong Kok Char Chan Teng Photo credit: www.singapuradailyphoto.blogspot.com Time for Tea Walk off your lunch by shopping at Bugis Junction, another MRT-linked mall with hundreds of retail shops, before resting at Wong Kok Char Chan Teng for tea. This Hong Kong style café is a hit in Malaysia with nearly 20 outlets. Its only store in Singapore has over 200 items on its menu. For tea, savour their wide variety of finger food and designer drinks that come in exaggerated sizes. The Cappucino Coke is exactly how it sounds – coffee and Coke. It may seem an odd combination but the sweet fizziness of the Coke and the bitter edge of the coffee actually play off one another quite well. Here, the Hong Kong café staple Ying Yang (a mix of coffee and tea) comes in a glass that is well over a foot tall. If you visit the café on your birthday, you can get their Giant Size Hong Kong Milk Tea for free. The jug-like portion can quench the thirst of at least six people. To go with the giant drink, order the Thick Toast which is drizzled with a generous amount of peanut butter and served with a scoop of chocolate icecream and chocolate sauce. The Omelett Chee Cheong Fun (flat rice noodles) tastes just like white chai tau kway (fried carrot cake) with extra oomph from the wok hei (fragrance from the heat of the pan) flavour. ![]() Desserts and cakes from Cawaii Koohii Maid Café are even sweeter when served by the waitresses who are dressed as French maids A five-minute walk from Raffles City is Funan DigitaLife Mall, the one-stop haven for IT and electronic gadgets. There, you will find another option for tea that might pique your interests. Cawaii Koohii Maid Café is a novel, concept Japanese café with its only outlet in Singapore on the 5th level. This Japanese restaurant is a Meido kafe, a sub-category of Cosplay restaurants that are all the rage in Japan. Here, the waitresses are dressed in maid costumes and instead of a restaurant environment, you will be treated as if you were in your own home. The highlights of this café are its mocktails and desserts. All the mocktails are named after popular Japanese anime characters and come in a rainbow array of colours. To satisfy your sweet tooth, try the Pot of Gold - a trio of cream puffs filled with your choice of ice cream flavour – chocolate, strawberry, green tea, mango or vanilla – or the Sumatra, a mousse cake that incorporates dark and white chocolate with Sumatra coffee. ![]() Home-style Taiwanese cooking at Xian Ding Wei offers pure comfort food for dinner A Place for Dinner Head to the heartlands for dinner.
