Opened in November 2009, this spanking new apart’hotel is located in the latest urban quarters of Arnulfpark, just 15 minutes’ walk from Marienplatz, the epicentre and shopping hub of Munich.

“As the newest Citadines property to open in Europe since 2002, Citadines Munich Arnulfpark sets itself apart from existing properties in Europe with its new studio concept of proper large beds and a sliding separation panel to provide privacy,” says Josiane Kuehn, Area Manager Germany & Eastern Europe, Citadines Munich Arnulfpark.

Its modern and trendy design also brings urban comfort to the seasoned traveller. Expect no less than state-of-the-art “techno” touches like flat screen TVs, DVD players and iPod docking stations in every room.

Each of the 146 fully-equipped apartments comes with a convertible sofa in the lounge and a large bed in the bedroom so a couple with a child can stay comfortably without any extra charge. Small guests also get their very own little bath kits.

Service beyond Expectations

This brand new apart’hotel also comes with a level of service that goes the extra mile, something that guest KF Loh who stayed for two nights in December last year, experienced firsthand.

“I discovered that my passport was still at the hotel reception when I arrived at Zurich airport. Sylvie, the receptionist, helped me over the phone to find ways to get it back to me in time for a later flight home. She was knowledgeable, helpful and made me feel less anxious about the situation by agreeing to check all avenues,” shares Loh.

“The assistant residence manager then, Pierre Brunaud, went beyond my expectations by taking a train to the Zurich airport station to return the passport to me in person and apologised on behalf of the staff. I must say the entire episode turned from a nightmare to a really positive and memorable experience,” recalls a grateful Loh.

What an exciting day it was for Brunaud as he recounts the episode enthusiastically.

“When we got the call, we thought okay, let’s take a taxi to deliver the passport to the airport. But suddenly we realised that it was not the one in Munich, but the one in Zurich, Switzerland! As a team, we started to brainstorm on all the possible options to assist the guest. Eventually, we decided that the safest way was to take the passport to the guest personally. So I jumped onto the next train to Zurich airport.

“When the guest arrived home, it took only a couple of days for her to write a very nice commentary on our guest survey. A few weeks later, we received other guests from Singapore. During a simple conversation, those guests mentioned they had a friend who had come a month ago or so, and said she had told them how great the team was in dealing with a passport issue. So when I said it was “us” who arranged the solution, they praised us again and shared their admiration for the quality of the service provided,” Brunaud adds.

In just the first six months of operation since opening, Citadines Munich Arnulfpark has already garnered numerous compliments for its excellent service. Guests have found the staff to be very helpful, friendly and well-versed with their local knowledge.

Amongst them was Rob Griffith. He works as an Editor for Visual Impact Magazine in Australia and was in Munich to attend a trade show at the Messe Munchen International in June this year. He spent six nights at the apart’hotel and was suitably impressed.

“The staff at the front desk has these great transport maps of Munich. I was asking for directions to a couple of places in town and trying to pronounce the locations. Well, like most Aussies, I have a fairly broad accent. We had a good laugh at how bad my attempt at speaking German was. The staff, Sylvie, gave me some pointers on pronunciation, and taught me how to order beers and ask for directions in German - which I did appreciate. There's a great Beer Hall down the road from the apart’hotel, and thanks to Sylvie, I was able to order beers in German. That was a thrill for me,” Griffith enthuses.

Griffith recommends some of his best moments. “My highlights in Munich were the English Gardens, the local markets near the centre of town and, just walking around looking at the architecture and strolling along the main river. The tram stop is right in front of the apart’hotel and the main train station is only a short walk away, so you have easy access to getting around Munich. I never had to use a taxi.

“At the end of each day it was a joy to return to Citadines Munich Arnulfpark. The facilities were first-class, the location was ideal, and the staff was just fantastic. Whether your travels are for business or pleasure, or both, I would happily recommend the apart’hotel to anyone travelling to Munich,” sums up Griffith.

Soak in the Bavarian culture

One iconic landmark is the tower of the New Town Hall, which houses the Glockenspiel, a beautiful carillon that chimes daily at 11am or noon. Watch 32-life-sized figures re-enact historical Bavarian events and look out for the golden bird that chirps at the end of each show.

All around the central square of Marienplatz, shops, cafes and even an outdoor farmers market called Viktualienmarkt beckon.

The Octoberfest is a 16-day Bavarian festival that runs from end of September to early October each year

For those who appreciate the arts, take a 20-minute walk to the famous trio of museums - The Alte Pinakothek, The Neue Pinakothek and The Pinakothek der Moderne - each of them highlighting a different era in European art.

And if you happen to be in Munich from mid September to early October, join in the annual Oktoberfest where lots of feasting and beer chugging happen. Locals, young or old, take to the streets with the typical Bavarian costume complete with leather trousers for men and the Dirndl for women. Interestingly, this year marks the 200th anniversary of this unique tradition.
