Shanghai’s Residential District Welcomes New Urban Playground for Families

Minhang Plaza woos young families with children-centred shops and activities

With an excellent mix of shops and plenty of activities for the family, Minhang Plaza is set to be a landmark mall in the area

Life in Minhang district is idyllic. It is largely a residential district in the centre of southeast Shanghai. The homes in the district are generally middle-class residences with some top-notch villas. Furthermore, the key-shaped district is well linked with the Shanghai Metro Line 1 and 5 running throughout. Now, the residents of Minhang district have yet another reason to cheer. CapitaMalls Asia (CMA) has introduced a brand new mall targeting the increasing number of families with children there.

Minhang Plaza is located in the core of downtown Minhang district. It is surrounded by middle-class residences, government institutions, offices and schools. It is also within walking distance of Metro subway lines 1 and 5 for the area. Given its excellent location, Minhang Plaza is set to be a landmark shopping destination in this district. But location is only one of its many attractions.

Drawing Young Families and Trendy Youths

Its central location in the midst of a mature residential area was key to CMA's decision to develop Minhang Plaza into a trendy family mall. But it is its specially selected, family-centred retail shops and eateries that have made this mall a hit since it opened its doors in July this year.

Shops that appeal to children take centre stage at this 87,000-square metre mall. For starters, Taiwanese children's brand PIYO PIYO has set up shop at Minhang Plaza. The little yellow duck that adorns everything from baby products to accessories, bedding, toys, stationery and children's furniture are now wowing a whole new market. For something from the West, there is Toys R Us with row upon row of toys, games, educational products and clothes for children of every age.

For the family, there are anchor tenants like global supermarket and general merchandise store, TESCO; home appliances store, YOLO and karaoke place, Holiday KTV; trendy Singapore fashion brand, Charles & Keith, as well as others like CK Jeans and G-Star. For the young, there are high street fashion stores on the first level and trendy F&B outlets like Starbucks, Xin Wang and indigenous Singapore bakery, Bread Talk in the mall.

"CapitaLand's Minhang Plaza is by far this district's largest landmark. Its convenient transportation system, excellent living environment as well as the rapid development in this area made it a choice location for Charles & Keith. Our presence here shows that Charles & Keith has strong confidence in our international expansion and the development of the local markets," comments a Charles & Keith spokesperson.

To add to the mall's appeal, the soon-to-be-opened 32-storey office block adjacent to Minhang Plaza will have gyms, children's educational centres and banks taking up tenancy there.

"Minhang Plaza is my new destination for shopping. I come here to TESCO for grocery shopping as well as to fashion brands such as Charles & Keith and CK Jeans for clothes and accessories. This weekend, I will bring my son to the cinema for Transformers 3," 33-year-old Xu Yuan, who lives in this district, says.

Entertaining the Family

Beyond retail therapy, Minhang Plaza is also a playground for children and youths. Top cinema Premiere International Cinema (PIC) is on level four. Also on the same level is an indoor play area for children called E-Kids Island. There are rides, games, playgrounds, stations filled with building blocks for toddlers and even a giant balloon room for them to romp around in.

"On the first day of its opening, I took my daughter directly to the fourth floor for E-Kids Island. We have been looking forward to spending quality time there and as expected, my daughter really enjoyed all the toys and interactive games inside," says Cheng Jiayi, a 31-year old father living in the district.

As with many CMA malls, Minhang Plaza has a roof top playground to offer extra leisure space for children and their families.

Engaging Everyone

Another place that Minhang Plaza has for shoppers to gather at is within the unique glass pyramid at the main entrance of the mall. The area forms a large piazza that provides a view of the area around while sheltering people from the elements. It is perfect for performances, screening of movies, bazaars and exhibitions that are sure to add vibrancy to the district.

With so much going on, Minhang Plaza will certainly add to the buzz in Minhang district.
